报告摘要
Terahertz (THz) technology shows great potential for 6G communications, radar detection, and biomedicine. Programmable metasurfaces provide a key solution for flexible THz wave control. Here we present recent advances based on tunable materials such as liquid crystals and VO2. A 1-bit phased metasurface antenna array exploiting the electro-optic effect of liquid crystals achieved one-dimensional beam steering. To further scale performance, a crossbar switching architecture expanded the array to 3000 elements, enabling two-dimensional dynamic beam scanning. A THz communication demonstration assisted by the programmable metasurface was further implemented using the crossbar architecture. Meanwhile, a VO2-based programmable metasurface with nonvolatile memory was achieved through optimized structural design and thermal management. Furthermore, integrating detection and control functions into electrically addressable pixels enabled adaptive THz beam steering, with the beam direction automatically responding to incident light intensity. These advances promote the application of metasurfaces in THz communications and lay the groundwork for intelligent THz systems.
